Hyperic Installation Problem on Linux

Hi,

Is it mandatory to have 'root' access to install Hyperic on Linux box. Installation stops as it ask to run 'tune-os.sh' file as root.

1. Is there a way to install Hyperic with 'root' access?

Is groovy available on agent side ?

I couldn't find groovy-n.n.n.jar on the agent system. Is it part of the agent install base ?
That would be neat to have - groovy is way better than perl.
And the question to people who have more experience with groovy - are there other considerations against using groovy on agent side ? Say, if I drop groovy-1.5.6.jar into agent lib folder and then use scripts (for control actions and monitoring). I could use bytecode compiled scripts to avoid performance penalty on initial startup, but there is still overhead with loading JVM.

After three attempts we are not sure if there is an issue with HQE

We have deployed in line with the "RunHQinCLoud" after having issues logging in
Error: Incorrect user name or password:

After - terminating and now re creating a NEW instance we received this error

WARNING: Ignoring extra parameter(s): [ourpassword]

When trying the UI we can get the Login screen but no Login or PW works

1) Any advise on fixing this so we do not need to recreate another Instance?

Hyperic Server keeps crashing (quietly) on my Mac Mini

Hello,

I've been trying to use a Mac Mini as a Hyperic Server for monitoring several hosts.

Hyperic Server seems to crash and die without leaving any trace of error messages after running for 24 -> 48 hours.

Any suggestions on how to fix this issue or even properly diagnose it (error logs that I must be missing, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.

Migrating Hyperic cluster to Production Environment

Hi All,
  We configured Hyperic HQ server cluster for monitoring pre-production environment. Pre-production environment is just mirror of our production environment. We have several Jboss servers in clusters. We are able to monitor successfully. We set up alerts, group the resources, create roles, created dashboards, favorite resources. For Hyperic we used external database Oracle. It has been successfully running last one month.

  Now we would like to move this configuration to production environment? Can any body suggest What is the best way to do?. I don't want to loose all these alerts and roles.

Please provide your valuable suggestions.

Thanks
Nida

I am following the instruction on Page 13 RunHQinCloud:
$ ssh -i id_rsa-hqserver-keypair hqadmin@ec2-67-202-9-216.compute-1.amazonaws.com
$ sudo mkfs -t xfs /dev/sdh
$ sudo /opt/hyperic/tools/mount_mysql.sh
$ /opt/hyperic/server/bin/hq-server.sh stop
$ /opt/hyperic/agent/bin/hq-agent.sh stop
$ sudo mysqldump -Q -u root -p12345 --all-databases > /mysql/full-db-dump.sql
$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysqld stop

When I run the mysqldump statement I get "/mysql/full-db-dump.sql: Permission Denied"

I have tried replacing root with hqadmin and -p12345 with the hqadmin password.
I have also tried removing both.

I'm now stuck.... Can someone please help...?

Thanks

How to monitor MBeans

Hi,

I am fairly new to Hyperic world. I currently have the Hyperic Server and Agent running on my local machine and I can see my agent in the server console. I have a simple Mbean that I can see using JConsole using the JMXServiceURL as "service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://localhost:9999/server".

I am trying to write the jmx plugin for it to auto discover it, but I'm not sure what goes for OBJECT_NAME. Can some one help. Let me know if you have any questions.

BIND 9.6.1 named.stats file format changed

Hi,
after installing BIND 9.6.1 i figured out that named.stats file have new format. There are lots of new informations. But my Hyperic agent obviously can not "parse" those stats. I searched for some informations on web regarding those changes and only found that newer versions of BIND 9 have new stats format and that it can not be changed.

So, is it possible to force agent to correctly parse new BIND stats? Do we need to wait for new version of agent?

My configuration is:
- Solaris 10
- BIND 9.6.1
- hyperic agent 4.2.0

Best regards

Need Help Setting Up Alerts

New user here, so please forgive me if I'm asking something that's very simple to do...

We're monitoring availability of IIS websites. (IIS 6.x VHost )

We'd like an email alert when the site goes down, and when it goes up.  One email per incident.

I've tried various configurations...  and haven't nailed it yet.  I've spent most of the afternoon trying different things, and I end up getting an email every minute (the interval for the monitor), or one when it goes down but not when it comes back up (think this has to do with marking it "fixed").

We don't want to have to mark something "fixed" or "acknowledged".

I've tried creating an alert for availability<100%, =100% (for up and down), but when I could get neither of those to just fire one time per state change, I tried an alert for availability value changed -- but of course this doesn't tell us in the email if it's up or down (just toggles).

This should be pretty simple...  Could somebody help me come up with some simple alerts that do what we're looking for?

Resources I've looked at include:
http://support.hyperic.com/display/DOC/Controlling+Alert+and+Notification+Volume
http://forums.hyperic.com/jiveforums/search.jspa?objID=f1&q=alert&vid=079111e1-f77b-4c36-a34e-b966171dc2e2&lf_cid=hyperic

I Tried rstarting the hyperic server then agent --SErver came up agent got error on VM machine..
cant connect to 127.0.0.1:2144.

NO firewall issue here .

I got an error saying cannot connect to 127.0.0.1:2144 so I deleted the DATA directory under agent
directory and tried starting up the agent.  I thought if you delete the data directory Hyperic would ask for all the questions about the stuff that normally could be in the agent.properties file. I dont have a agent.properties file so why does starting the agent NOT ask the questions and automatically is pickinh up 127.0.0.1:2144 . I would like to change that particular definition ???

Hello.

I am trying to retrieve the number of disk read bytes at any one time with SIGAR and I'm having some unusual results. when I run this code:

Sigar sigar = new Sigar();

org.hyperic.sigar.DiskUsage infos = sigar.getDiskUsage("D:\\");

long read = infos.getReadBytes();

I get a very big number that is not representative of the disk usage. Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong? I'd be very pleased!

the numbers coming back are in the region of:
628467
629786
629514

Unable to communicate with server -- provider not yet setup

Hello guys

Good Morning!

We have just recently started using HQ and facing one issue at the moment. Before I land over  here, I had google around the problem it seems a bug and may be not. I am still not sure whether it is bug or somewhat?

We have agent-4.2.0 & server-4.2.0 installed on single XP SP2 machine. Everything seems fine and I am going with all default values at the moment.

After starting agent & server, I see below error in agent logs and server could not auto discover agents/services.

2010-04-20 11:04:26,640 ERROR [Thread-1] [AutoinventoryCommandsServer] Unable to send autoinventory platform data to server, sleeping for 33 secs before retrying.  Error: Unable to communicate with server -- provider not yet setup

Could any one please help me to get this resolved or redirect me to appropriate location if it is not supposed to be here...?

Thanks in advance.

Shashi

Monitoring database connection pools in Tomcat

Hello,

How do I monitor database connection pools in my Tomcat 6.0 servers with Hyperic? I did some digging in to the documentation, and I found the below URL referencing the "DataSource Pool Service", but I am not sure if that is what I am looking for, nor how to configure it if it is what I need.

http://support.hyperic.com/display/hypcomm/Apache+Tomcat+6.0+DataSource+Pool+service

My Tomcat servers do not show any DataSource Pools in Hyperic. Hyperic did auto-discover the other metrics referenced in the Tomcat plugin docs, such as Cache, Global Request Processor, Thread pools, etc.

Also, I see at the bottom of the Tomcat config screen in Hyperic that "Auto-Discovery for Caches, DataSource Pools, and other services is ON".

Any idea on how to monitor Tomcat DB connection pools with Hyperic?

Thanks,
Brian

Are there plans for Hyperic to use the latest version of PostgreSQL as the backing database?

SNMP configuration error : log4j-snmp-trap-appender

Hoping there is someone here who has had a successful setup to trap SNMP messages from the log4j framework using log4j-snmp-trap-appender ( http://code.google.com/p/log4j-snmp-trap-appender/ )

I've followed the instructions on the wiki page "Configuring HQ as an SNMP Trap Receiver" ( http://support.hyperic.com/display/DOC/Configuring+HQ+as+an+SNMP+Trap+Receiver )

Below is the error that is captured in the Agent log.

I guess the obvious questions are :-

1. When configuring the 'New Platform' what should the FQDN be ? There is no physical device but an application using the log4j Framework to send SNMP traps.
2. How about the "IP Address". Same as above since there is no phyical device with a name or IP address.
3.. When configuring the platform, what should the snmpip and snmpPort be ?

Thanking in advance.

How do I receive Windows Virtual Bytes ?

Weblogic 9.2 managed instances not been discovered running HQ 4.5.1.2 Tria

hello,

I am running Hyperic 4.5.1.2 in a REDHAT environment with 4 different machines. Two of them are running Weblogic and and only the instances running in the machine where the Admin server is running get discovered.

I do not see any error in the log (DEBUG modus) of the agent and I could see that all instances have been traced in the log file within the WeblogicDetector class.

I already tried all the steps listed in the document:

http://support.hyperic.com/display/hyperforge/Configure+HQ+Agent+to+Monitor+WebLogic+Server#ConfigureHQAgenttoMonitorWebLogicServer-SolveManagedServerAutoDiscoveryProblems

Still not working, no clue how two continue..., could be related to the fact that I am using the trial version and there are some limitations there, I could find out that it is possible to manage a max of 50 machines with this version, am i right??

I would appreciate any help ...

Thanks in advance,

Nico
